Zeaborn Ship Management hosts a 2-day in-house MRM train the trainer course

By Bridge Resource Management, Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Train the trainer No Comments

Zeaborn Ship Management, one of our newest MRM licencees, hosted a 2-day in-house MRM train the trainer course at their headquarters in Hamburg, Germany on February 6-7, 2020. This shows a strong commitment from its management to implement MRM from top to bottom and an inspiration to its employees to be more proactive and to continuously contribute in minimising accidents and incidents on-board and even at the shore side. The event highlighted case studies where participants discussed what went wrong and how would the incidents/accidents could have been avoided. There was a good mix of participants coming from the shore-side management and officers working on-board that made the discussions interesting.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks Zeaborn Ship Management for hosting a successful MRM event!

By ALL Academy, Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Seminars/Conferences No Comments

Martin Hernqvist, Managing Director of ALL Academy, was invited to speak at the Maritime Conference Myanmar which was held on 15-16 November 2018 at Rose Garden Hotel in Yangon. The event was organised by Myanmar Nautical Association (MNA) and about 340 delegates attended the conference. During the event, Mr. Hernqvist’s presentation revolved around Maritime Resource Management.

Reading from the organisers’ post, the focus of the conference was on major insurance, regulation, environment and job opportunities for Myanmar seafarers, with a focus on how the industry has progressed in its technology adoption strategy, and what more needs to be done.

The conference was the first event ever organised within the maritime industry in Myanmar. The event brought together representatives from regional associations, government entities, shipowners, and major stakeholders with the aim of developing Myanmar’s maritime sector.

MAIB reports lack of pilot and Master communication on CMA CGM Centaurus Jebel Ali berth collision

By Accidents and investigations, Bridge Resource Management, Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Master/Pilot No Comments

The recent release of MAIB’s report on the collision that occurred on 04 May 2017 involving containership CMA CGM Centaurus and the berth at Jebel Ali port in Dubai highlighted a few important MRM principles. The lack of Master and Pilot communication was just one of them. In the report, it also stated that the pilot-bridge interaction was kept to minimum therefore making it difficult for the master to actively engage in the act of pilotage. There was no shared mental picture for both the pilot and the bridge staff giving no chance for a healthy challenge and response environment.

MAIB remarked: “It is imperative that pilots and ships’ bridge teams work together and implement the best practices of Bridge Resource Management to ensure the safety of both ships and ports.”

Odd theme at CrewConnect Europe conference in Copenhagen

By Seminars/Conferences No Comments

What have politics to do with maritime human factors training? Or rather, what can politicians learn from an industry where leadership, communication, challenge & response and situation awareness are critical in order to make good decisions and to get things right? It turned out, quite a lot. Martin Hernqvist of ALL Academy, who gave the presentation, said he had never before illustrated the need for resource management with such an odd example, far from the maritime business. The presentation clearly showed that resource management is not just for shipping and aviation. The ideas can be applied in everything that we do – at work and in our personal lives – in situations where good decsions are critical. “It was a little bit of an experiment”, Martin admits after his presentation. “Politics may be sensitive, people may have very strong opinions about it and you don’t know who is in the audience.” However, the presentation was well received at the CrewConnect Europe Conference and Martin claimed he had never before received so many positive comments from delagates after a presentation like this time in Copenhagen.

What can we learn from this? First, looking at things from a different perspective is always important. Second, if you have an idea that you wish to try – no matter how odd it may seem – “just do it”.
