Tärntank Invites ALL Academy in Manila

By ALL Academy, Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Seminars/Conferences No Comments

Tärntank Ship Management AB, an award winning tanker shipping company, has invited ALL Academy to their annual in-house Officer’s Meeting on January 28, 2016 at the Tärntank Manila Office in Makati, Philippines. A one-day course was facilitated by ALL Academy which focused on “Challenge and Response”, one of the vital concepts/teachings in the MRM Programme. Tärntank has a very good mix of officers and crew coming from the Philippines, East Europe and Scandinavia. Therefore with the mixed cultures working together onboard, comes a need to establish an open communication where they can challenge each other and respond to challenges positively in order to increase safety. Accident reports often show that making challenges and responding to them is a major weakness in communication. In some cultures, people are sometimes uncomfortable in questioning or challenging a superior’s decision and tend to just keep it to themselves even if they should have challenged his/her superior who committed an error.

As Tärntank aims to constantly improve its vessels and to ensure that all its employees can work safely and effectively, seminars and conferences are frequently organized by the company to equip its employees with necessary soft-skills trainings such as the MRM programme.

The objective of the course is to help the participants recognise the importance of establishing a Challenge and Response environment onboard to increase safety and also to help them recognise that the whole team is involved in Challenge and Response. There was a good interaction among the participants where they shared their own experiences and also they were able to learn from their colleagues’ perspective on challenge and response. In attendance were Filipino officers, crewing staff from the local office, and also Dick Höglund (Financial Manager), Niklas Johansson (Personnel Manager) and Artis Ozols (Safety Manager) all 3 coming from their headquarters in Sweden.

Third time in one year with Wallenius Marine in Manila

By Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Seminars/Conferences No Comments

Some of the most enjoyable events are the meetings with seafarers and shore-side staff at crew conferences. It has been a privilege for ALL Academy to embark upon an MRM project with Wallenius Marine in Stockholm and Singapore where the focus so far has been on introducing the MRM concept to their seafarers. In less than a year, this has been done three times in connection with officer conferences in Manila. The third such event was held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel and a full day, 8 October 2014, was dedicated to MRM. The day ended with a case study analyzed from an MRM perspective. A selection of photos from the event are shown below.

By Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Seminars/Conferences No Comments

A month after the first MRM session for Stena RoRo, ALL Academy had the pleasure of repeating the task on May 27th. The conference took place at Arken conference centre in Gothenburg. The event was very similar to last time with about 50 participants of which half the group from office and half from sea. A good mix most suitable for the MRM topic.

Informa Manning and Training Conference highlights safety culture, management and leadership issues

By Maritime Resource Management (MRM), Seminars/Conferences No Comments

Manning and Training conference, Copenhagen, 13-14 May 2014, Stand lrThe 17th European Manning and Training conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 13-14 May 2014. Organised by Informa Maritime Events and excellently chaired by Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of InterManager. The conference gathered some 150 participants from near and far.

Martin Hernqvist was one of the speakers and the title of his speech was “Developing effective safety cultures on board – moving outside the box to achieve results.” In his speech he talked about the three components of competency – ‘knowledge’, ‘skills’ and ‘attitude’. He mentioned that the maritime industry is too much ‘certificate focused’ and said that “certificates mean little, results matter”. He concluded that we have to move outside the box (meaning the STCW Code and Convention) and involve the ship owner and ship manager to achieve results. Effective safety cultures cannot be established if those are not on board.
