Informa Manning and Training Conference highlights safety culture, management and leadership issues

Manning and Training conference, Copenhagen, 13-14 May 2014, Stand lrThe 17th European Manning and Training conference was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 13-14 May 2014. Organised by Informa Maritime Events and excellently chaired by Kuba Szymanski, Secretary General of InterManager. The conference gathered some 150 participants from near and far.

Martin Hernqvist was one of the speakers and the title of his speech was “Developing effective safety cultures on board – moving outside the box to achieve results.” In his speech he talked about the three components of competency – ‘knowledge’, ‘skills’ and ‘attitude’. He mentioned that the maritime industry is too much ‘certificate focused’ and said that “certificates mean little, results matter”. He concluded that we have to move outside the box (meaning the STCW Code and Convention) and involve the ship owner and ship manager to achieve results. Effective safety cultures cannot be established if those are not on board.
